Orthodontics
Commerce Park Children's Dentistry & Orthodontics's orthodontists, Dr. Debi Berger and Dr. Mary Ritter specialize in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of facial and dental problems, for both young people and adults.
The recommendation of the American Association of Orthodontists is for every child to be examined by the age of 7. While every child does not require treatment at this time, an exam at this age allows Dr. Berger to evaluate each case and assess those patients who may benefit from early intervention. Treatment may range from simply maintaining space for developing adult teeth to the use of partial or full appliances to control the movement and growth of teeth.
When Early Treatment is Needed
The following are indications that early intervention may be required to correct muscle and/or jaw problems:
* An unbalanced profile
* Overbite, underbite, crossbite, gummy smile, deep overbite, open bite
* Overlapping or crowded teeth
* Spaced teeth
* Missing teeth or extra teeth
* Difficulty chewing
* Open-mouth breathing
* Speech problems
* Tongue-thrusting (pushing tongue against teeth while swallowing)
* Thumb- or finger-sucking after age 4
* Jaw joint problem
